Herpetofaunal Atlas

During the 2009 and 2010 seasons the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) is conducting an Atlas project for amphibians and reptiles (EOMF Herpetofaunal Atlas ) covering the 5 counties (Leeds & Grenville; Lanark; Prescott & Russell; Ottawa; and Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry) comprising the EOMF. As well Ontario Nature are partnering with the EOMF and NHIC to create a new Ontario Herpetofaunal Atlas Program. With the aid of landowners, individuals and naturalist clubs providing sightings records the Atlas will catalogue the general and local distributions of the more than 50 species of frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, turtles, skinks and snakes known to be resident in Ontario.

The Macnamara Field Naturalist Club Contribution

The Macnamara Field Naturalist Club (MFNC) is participating in the Atlas and is looking for volunteers to provide sightings information during the course of 2009 and 2010. From the data submitted to the MFNC Atlas co-ordinator ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) by its club members the MFNC will create a Renfrew County specific count from the sightings forwarded to the EOMF Atlas project and the Ontario Nature Atlas Project. Under the Renfrew County count the club is very interested in having sightings made along the Macnamara Trail as part of its initiative to document the flora and fauna of our trail.

Contests

The MFNC is holding both a photo contest and a sightings contest and the EOMF is holding a photo contest. Entries into the MFNC contest cover all sightings within Ontario. Those sightings within the 5 counties and the bordering areas around their perimeter will also be eligible for entry into the EOMF and will be forwarded to the EOMF by the MFNC Atlas co-ordinator. All sightings and photos by MFNC members must first be sent into the MFNC Atlas co-ordinator at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it who will then forwarded them to the EOMF or Ontario Nature as appropriate. This will prevent double counting by these organizations.

Submissions from MFNC members, queries about the MFNC participation in the EOMF Atlas and the MFNC contests should be sent to the MFNC Atlas co-ordinator: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Tuesday, September 7: After a summer of nature close at hand and field trips, we turn our attention to the skies and learn about astronomy from expert Brian McCullough.

Attention MFNC members! We have secured a booth at the upcoming Carp Fair, and we need volunteers to help us set up, take down, decorate, plan and mostly, to represent the Club at the Fair. Four hour volunteer slots are available from Thursday evening to Sunday at 6 pm September 23-26th. Each volunteer will receive one day pass to the Fair. If interested please contact Art Goldsmith at treasurer@mfnc.ca with what you can do to help and when.
